The 2018 football season quietly and mercifully came to an end for the Walker Valley Mustangs on Friday night as they welcomed Soddy-Daisy to “The Corral.”
The home team fought to the bitter end, but like the previous nine games this season, they had no answer for their opponents size and speed advantage as they dropped a 43-0 decision to the Trojans.
The rain stopped just in time for Senior Night festivities as Walker Valley said goodbye to more than 100 senior band members, cheerleaders and football players.
Seniors Cole and Ethan Gobble, Kyle West, Clint Davis, Cameron Saunders and Spencer Wilson led the way for the Mustangs as they took the field one last time.
As for the game, it was decided early on. The Trojans were playing for the Region 4-5A title and the top seeding heading into the playoffs with a win over the Mustangs.
That would be all the motivation the Trojans would need as Garrett Richardson took the opening kickoff and ran it back 92 yards for a lightning quick touchdown to give Soddy-Daisy a 7-0 lead only 15 seconds into the game.
Soddy-Daisy ran out of quarterbacks last week as both went down with an injury. So, coach Justin Barnes looked around and found a more than suitable fill-in with defensive back Spencer Gore.
After one week of practice, Gore, who had never played the position before Friday night, ran for three scores and threw for another. Gore finished his outstanding night by rushing for 137 of his teams 189 yards on the ground and heaving a 49-yard touchdown pass.
Things went from bad to worse for the Mustangs as they fumbled the ensuing kickoff, putting the Trojans in business at the 35-yard line. The Walker Valley defense stiffened though, forcing an apparent Soddy Daisy punt.
The Trojans reached into their bag of tricks and came up with a fake punt that worked to perfection as Gore covered the 40 yards to pay dirt for the touchdown. Cooper Hamilton booted the extra point for a 14-0 lead.
The Trojans put the game out of reach in the second quarter with a pair of touchdowns. Hayden Maynor capped off a seven-play 60-yard drive with an 8-yard scamper to the end zone for a 21-0 lead. Maynor did the damage again 30 seconds before halftime as he gathered in a screen pass from Gore and weaved his way down the field, 48 yards for the score and a 28-0 halftime advantage.
It was Gore and Maynor carrying the load for the Trojans in the second half of the contest as Gore added a five-yard TD run three minutes into the third quarter and a 12-yard dash to open the fourth quarter to cap off the scoring and secure their top spot in the playoff picture starting next week.
A few of the Mustang standouts were the Gobble brothers, West, Davis, Saunders and Wilson, Zach Hovey, Christian VanDusen, Dylan Jenkins, Garrett Noble, Griffin Broome, Kyler Parris, Avery Gray, Trevor Vines and Brody Swafford.
