CLEVELAND, Tenn. — Senior running back Hayden Maynor has been Soddy-Daisy's emergency quarterback this year. When the emergency came last week when both Trojans quarterbacks went down with injury, coach Justin Barnes and Maynor turned to his best friend, defensive back Spencer Gore.

Emergency call answered and received. Gore never had played quarterback in a game, but he is

now 1-0 and Soddy-Daisy is a region champion for the first time since 1996 after the Trojans

ended Walker Valley's winless season with a 43-0 rout Friday night.

Gore scored three rushing touchdowns and threw to Maynor for another as the 5-4 Trojans won the

4-5A title with a 3-1 region record. The Trojans danced at midfield with the news that Knoxville Catholic had defeated Hardin Valley, and an emotional Barnes celebrated with his team and

150 fans.

"It's just huge, huge for the school and the kids," Barnes said. "Winning the region has been our

goal since I got here, and we got it done tonight. We've been building toward this. I just can't tell

you how happy I am for the kids here tonight and those who came before them."

After one week of practice, Gore ran for 137 yards on 11 carries for the Trojans, who rushed for

189 yards. Gore scored on runs of 39, 6 and 13 yards, the first coming on a fake punt, and his touchdown throw was on a 48-yard screen pass to Maynor.

"Hayden is my best friend, and he helped me all week," said Gore, a baseball player who showed good arm strength on several long passes. "I never practiced at quarterback until this week, but I

felt good when the game started."

The tone was set for the night on the opening kickoff as Garrett Richardson returned the kick 92 yards for a touchdown after just 15 seconds of play.

"The kickoff really settled us down," Barnes said. "It got us going from the get-go, and I thought we played pretty well the rest of the way."

Walker Valley fumbled the ensuing kickoff after Richardson's score. Four plays later, Gore faked a punt and ran for a score. The second of Cooper Hamilton's five extra points made it 14-0, and the only question was how long it would take for the running clock to begin. That happened after

Gore's 6-yard touchdown run with 8:59 left in the third quarter.

Maynor rushed for one touchdown and 60 yards on 10 carries.
